Update on HICRA’s HEDUZA Project

The Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa was delighted to welcome Ms Wendy Bennett, Consultant of the International Program of the Medtronic Foundation and her colleague, Ms Heather Hudnut Page, to a site inspection of the first HEDUZA site at the Maternity Clinic of Groote Schuur Hospital.

The first HEDUZA touch panel was installed on 11 April 2012 at the Maternity Clinic of Groote Schuur Hospital at the University of Cape Town, 36 years after the first Apple computer (Apple-I) was released by Steve Jobs.

HEDUZA is a free health information resource available to all via the Internet. HEDUZA specifically targets pregnant women from various socio-economic and educational backgrounds, as well as strengthening the knowledge base of health care workers and doctors around the topic of cardiovascular disease in pregnancy in Africa.

HEDUZA transforms existing paper-based health information into a fun and informative new experience through an interactive multimedia website. One of the main elements of conveying health information is the utilization of storytelling producing health information video clips for information.

The project is closely linked to the Heart and Maternity Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital of the University of Cape Town which is led by Prof. Karen Sliwa and Prof, John Anthony. The content of the platform is developed by a think-tank of doctors and researchers from the University of Cape Town.

At the site inspection, the future roll-out of the project was discussed. We look forward to the Medtronic Foundation’s continued involvement in our project.
