Professor Lionel Opie, former director of UCT’s Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa, received a very special award to acknowledge his outstanding contribution at a recent ceremony to mark the Faculty of Health Sciences Centenary Celebrations. The Department of Medicine elected to celebrate papers that had been cited at least 100 times. A total of 39 researchers had achieved this “classic mark” with at least one paper, as reported by Head of Department, Professor Bongani Mayosi.
Professor Opie has published 534 scientific articles, 31 books on heart disease and 141 contributions to other books. No fewer than 52 of his articles have been cited at least 100 times.
